Fred Mertz and his team specialize in Alberta land for sale and believe in a set of values that they and their clients understand as a “Code of the West.” Say what you’ll do. Do what you say. Stand behind your handshake.
As an agricultural tax specialist as well as a REALTOR®, Fred Mertz is uniquely qualified to represent you when you want to sell or buy land. Associates Cortina Kereluk-Bird and Sandra Harasymuk help Fred provide the friendly, personal, efficient service that clients have come to expect.
Fred Mertz is an agricultural REALTOR®, chartered professional accountant, and certified general accountant serving family farms located in and around Calgary, Alberta. His approach when it comes to buying or selling land, also involves overseeing tax strategies before, during and after the process. This has made Fred and his team Alberta’s top resource for farming/ranch families. The fact that dozens of current and former clients happily refer him to friends and family members speaks volumes about his passion and commitment.
Fred helps families manage the ongoing tax and financial challenges that come with managing a farm or ranch, drawing on 15+ years of experience in agricultural accounting and taxation. His upbringing on an Alberta farm taught him firsthand how important and complex the sale of an agricultural property or business can be. He earned his real estate license and began helping clients negotiate property sales and sort through the tax, retirement, and cash flow implications.
Fred knows that deciding to sell a farm is an important financial and emotional decision, especially if the property has been in the family for generations. That’s why he limits the number of clients he accepts at any given time, ensuring that he can devote the appropriate time and attention to every situation.
He firmly believes that the continued success of his team will only come from following the right set of values, which includes treating every client like a family member – giving them the time they need to make the decisions that work for them, and always helping them to find solutions that work for their long-term plans, not just the short-term sale.
A Business Administration graduate, Cortina joined Fred’s accounting team in 1999 after several years with Revenue Canada. With family farming roots in Saskatchewan, she’s right at home working with Fred’s agricultural clients.
Born and raised in Saskatoon, Sandra entered the accounting field in 1989, working for a local firm. In 1995, she moved to Calgary and has worked with Fred ever since.
Here’s Clarence and Evelyn Buckleys Story:
“You’ve got to treat land as a trust that you’re looking after for the next generations. We feel that Fred understood our way of thinking.”
When Clarence and Evelyn Buckley wanting to farm less and travel more, they decided the time had come to sell some land. While any sale of farmland is emotional for those involved, it was especially so for the Buckleys. They cherish the land that Clarence’s grandfather first settled in 1886, and added to in 1930.
For the Buckleys, the decision to retain Fred Mertz for their land sale came easily. As their long-time tax specialist, he could integrate a sale with their personal tax planning strategy. And as a realtor with MaxWell Canyon Creek, they also knew Fred would represent their interests with complete personal commitment.
The land sale was completed by early 2007, and the Buckleys say they are happy with both the process Fred Mertz used, and the price he secured.
